Two bowl barrows

Two Bronze Age mounds rise from the Suffolk landscape east of Leiston, quiet reminders of people who walked this land thousands of years ago. These bowl barrows - circular burial mounds with a distinctive dip in the centre - sit in open countryside and are free to visit whenever you fancy. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just you, the fields, and Bronze Age archaeology.

What you're looking at are two separate mounds, each maybe 40 metres across. They're not towering structures - more like gentle hills you could cross in a few strides - but that's part of their charm. Standing on one, you can see across the flat Norfolk/Suffolk border landscape, and it's genuinely moving to think about the burials underneath and the ceremonies that happened here four thousand years back.

This works best for archaeology enthusiasts and walkers who don't mind a bit of detective work to find them. Families might manage it, though kids could get bored after twenty minutes unless you're actively interested in Bronze Age burial practices. There's no café, no facilities - bring water if it's warm.

If you're staying at Beach View or Cakes & Ale Holiday Park nearby, these barrows make a decent afternoon walk. Combine them with the wider countryside around Leiston - there's good footpath walking territory out here. It's not spectacular like some Iron Age forts, but if you're the type who stops to examine ancient earthworks, you'll find it rewarding. Low effort, zero cost, genuinely old. That's the appeal.
