The Medway's working waterfront comes alive at Twinney Wharf, where Rochester's maritime pulse still beats despite the modern world pressing in around it. Moored boats bob gently against the quay, their reflections rippling across water that's seen centuries of trade. This isn't a polished leisure marina - it's a proper working harbour where you might catch fishermen sorting nets or watch delivery boats come and go.

Walking the wharf takes twenty minutes or so, long enough to soak in the rhythm of the place without outstaying your welcome. The river views back towards Rochester's cathedral and castle are genuinely worth the stroll, particularly in late afternoon when the light softens. It's quieter than you'd expect for somewhere this close to a town, which makes it rather pleasant for a contemplative wander.

Families with younger children might find it a bit thin on activities - there's no playground or cafe to anchor a longer visit. Photographers, though, will find plenty worth framing. The working boats have character that leisure marinas have sanitised away. History types will appreciate standing where Tudor ships once launched and Georgian merchants struck deals.

It works well as part of a Rochester day trip, combining neatly with the castle and cathedral without demanding much time. Sheerness Holiday Park lies a manageable drive away if you're basing yourself in the area. Go on a weekday morning if possible - weekends draw the local dog-walkers, which isn't necessarily bad, but the wharf shows its true working self when it's quieter.
