London Stone

A chunk of sandstone roughly two metres high, stuck into the pavement on the High Street in Rochester. That's London Stone, and honestly, it's the sort of thing you'd walk past twice without noticing if someone didn't tell you it was there.

It's genuinely ancient though - records suggest it's been marking this spot since at least Roman times, possibly used as a boundary marker or mooring point for boats when the Medway was more navigable. The stone itself is weathered nearly smooth, which tells you how long it's been doing its job. There's a modest plaque explaining what you're looking at, and that's about it. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no theatre of any kind.

Historically-minded visitors get the most from it, particularly if you're already exploring Rochester's cathedral and castle. Walk the High Street anyway, so popping over to see London Stone adds five minutes to your morning. Kids will likely find it underwhelming - it's a rock, after all - unless you frame it as a hunt or tell them it's genuinely older than the Tower of London.

Free, obviously. Go whenever you like since it's just sitting there on the street. Spring or summer makes the town busier and more pleasant for wandering around properly.

If you're based at Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park or Sheerness Holiday Park, Rochester is close enough for a half-day trip. See the stone, grab lunch, wander the medieval streets. It's not a draw on its own, but as part of a proper day out exploring the Medway towns, it slots in nicely.
