Southend Pier Entrance

The entrance to Southend Pier is where things get properly lively. You're standing at the start of what's supposedly the longest pleasure pier in the world - it stretches out into the Thames Estuary for over a mile, which is frankly bonkers when you think about it. From Rochester, it's an easy enough drive down to the coast, and once you arrive, you can't miss it: a proper Victorian structure that's been there since 1889, all ornate ironwork and nostalgic seaside vibes.

The pier itself is free to walk onto, which is brilliant. You can just stroll out, breathe in the sea air, watch the boats, and pretend you're back in 1950. There's a railway train that runs the length of it if your legs are shot, though that costs a few quid. Kids will get a genuine kick out of it - there's an amusement arcade, fish and chips vans, and that indefinable seaside atmosphere that's hard to find elsewhere these days. Plan for a solid couple of hours if you're doing it properly, maybe longer if you fancy a sit-down at one of the cafes.

If you're staying at Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park or Essex Glamping, you're within striking distance. Both parks are family-focused, so they'll suit if you want a proper seaside base. The pier works as a decent half-day activity, though don't expect it to blow your mind - it's more about the experience of being there than seeing something extraordinary.
