Turner Contemporary Gallery

The converted Victorian pier-head building in Margate is impossible to miss - white and angular, it juts into the sea like a ship's bow. Turner Contemporary houses work by J.M.W. Turner himself, but equally important are the rotating contemporary exhibitions that keep the place feeling alive rather than museum-stuffy.

Inside, the galleries are surprisingly intimate. Natural light floods through floor-to-ceiling windows, so you're often looking at art with the sea as your backdrop. The permanent collection is modest but strong, focusing on Turner's seascapes and watercolours alongside modern pieces that respond to his legacy. Most visitors can see everything in two to three hours without feeling rushed.

It works best for art enthusiasts and anyone with a genuine interest in how contemporary artists engage with Turner's influence. Kids under ten will likely get bored within an hour unless there's a hands-on activity on. Families with teenage art students or sixth-formers? Absolutely bring them. The setting alone teaches you something about why Turner was obsessed with light and water.

Free entry is the main draw. Closed Mondays, but open 10am-5pm Tuesday to Sunday. Given Birchington is coastal and genteel, it pairs nicely with Birchington Vale Holiday Park just down the road if you're basing yourself here for a week. The gallery itself takes 90 minutes minimum, but the seafront promenade can eat up another couple of hours if the weather holds. Worth the trip if you're already in East Kent, but don't drive an hour just for this alone.
