Turin Hill

There's a proper scramble to the summit of Turin Hill, and that's rather the point. This isn't a gentle stroll from Forfar - it's a genuine hill walk that rewards you with views across the Mearns and back towards the North Sea on a clear day. You're looking at rough grassland, a bit of rocky terrain near the top, and the kind of wind that'll rearrange your hair whether you like it or not.

Walkers and outdoor types will get the most from it. Kids who enjoy actual climbing rather than flat paths will be keen; parents less so if they're expecting a sedate morning out. Allow a good couple of hours including the return journey, longer if you're stopping to take photos or catch your breath. The walk itself isn't technically difficult, just moderately steep and exposed in places, so pick a settled day.

It's free to visit, naturally. Worth tackling on a day when you're basing yourself at Greenhillock Glamping, which sits about six miles away across the moorland. The glamping site is well-reviewed, so you could knock off the hill walk in the morning and still have time for something easier in the afternoon. Turin Hill works best as part of a broader ramble around Aberdeenshire's uplands rather than a standalone destination, but if you're in Forfar anyway and the weather's decent, the views make the effort worthwhile.
