Tudor Merchant's House

Step through the crooked doorway and you're suddenly in a Tudor merchant's front parlour, complete with the smell of old timber and rushes underfoot. This three-storey house on Tenby's main street is proper medieval - built around 1500, it's one of the best-preserved merchant houses in Wales. The National Trust has done a lovely job recreating how a well-to-do trader would have lived 500 years ago.

Children love the wonky floors and low ceilings, though taller visitors will need to mind their heads on the wooden beams. Each room tells the story of Tudor domestic life, from the shop on the ground floor where the merchant sold his wares to the family quarters above. The painted wall decorations are particularly striking - geometric patterns that would have shown off the owner's wealth.

History enthusiasts could easily spend an hour here, though families with younger children might find 30 minutes plenty. It's right in the heart of Tenby, so perfect for combining with a wander around the harbour walls or a trip to the beach.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Saltern or Haven Kiln Park? This makes for an excellent rainy day diversion, and it's close enough to pop back to your caravan for lunch. Well worth the detour if you're exploring Pembrokeshire's coast.
