Trwyn Porth Dinllaen

The headland at Porth Dinllaen juts out into the Irish Sea like a weathered finger, and walking out here feels properly removed from the modern world. This historic site sits near Pwllheli on the Llyn Peninsula, and it's where a 19th-century village once thrived - fishermen's cottages, a pub, a church all clinging to the rocky shore. What remains now is mostly atmospheric: the ruins give you just enough to piece together what life was actually like, without the heavy-handed interpretation boards that ruin so many coastal spots.

The walk itself is half the appeal. You'll wind down through fields and coastal scrub, and the views across to Cardigan Bay sharpen with each step. On a clear day, you can see for miles. The beach is dramatic - rocky and unwelcoming in that way Welsh coasts do so well.

History types will find this genuinely interesting; families with younger kids might find it a bit sparse - there's no visitor centre or café, just the landscape and your own curiosity. Allow an hour and a half to do it justice, longer if you're a proper lingerer. Best visited outside summer weekends when it's quieter.
