Treworgan Fields

Rolling countryside west of Hereford, Treworgan Fields is the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people settle in this corner of England and simply stay. It's agricultural land, yes - proper working fields - but the views across the Wye Valley are generous enough that you'll want to linger longer than you planned.

There's no visitor centre or marked trail here, which means you're free to wander as you please. Walkers come for the open vistas and the quiet; it's the kind of spot where you notice the light changing across distant hills rather than crowds. History types might appreciate that you're looking at centuries of land management, but this isn't a heritage site with plaques and interpretation boards. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on actual activities - it's genuinely just fields and views - though older children who enjoy proper walks will get something out of the peaceful expanse.

Going in spring or early summer beats any other season; winter tends to mean muddy approaches and greyed-out vistas. Allow an hour or two depending on how much you want to ramble. It's free, naturally, though there's nowhere to buy a cup of tea nearby.

If you're staying at Trippenkennett Farm or Doward Park - both excellent campsites within spitting distance - Treworgan Fields makes a decent morning walk before you head into Hereford proper. It's the kind of unvarnished countryside that quietly justifies a week in the area.
