Treville Forest

The woodland around Treville, just outside Hereford, gives you proper forest walking without needing to drive miles into the Welsh borders. It's the kind of place where you can stretch your legs for an hour or half a day depending on what you fancy - plenty of tree cover means it's decent even when the sky's threatening rain, which in Herefordshire is most of the time.

You'll find mixed woodland here, the sort that changes through the seasons. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right; autumn's when the light gets interesting through the canopy. Walkers will get the most from it, though it's not dramatic terrain - more of a gentle meander than a proper hike. Families with younger kids won't struggle, but there's not a huge amount to hold their attention if they're hoping for adventure playgrounds or visitor facilities.

Being within striking distance of Hereford makes it useful if you're camping at one of the local sites - Burhope Farm or Long Coppice are close enough for an afternoon expedition. It's the sort of place you'd tack onto a day rather than make a special trip, unless you're genuinely keen on quiet woodland and don't mind the lack of amenities.

Access and opening details aren't always clear for these smaller forests, so best check locally when you arrive. Free to walk through, almost certainly, but worth confirming parking arrangements before you show up.
