Cockyard Wood

Deep paths wind through this mixed woodland just outside Hereford, where ancient oaks give way to beech groves and the occasional clearing lets in proper light. Cockyard Wood feels properly wild - not one of those manicured country park affairs where everything's signposted to death.

Walkers will find decent tracks threading through the trees, though you'll want proper boots if it's been wet. The name suggests this might have been working woodland once, possibly for charcoal burning, and there are still traces of old boundaries and earthworks if you know what to look for.

Families with young children might find it a bit much - there's no visitor centre or facilities, just forest. But older kids who enjoy proper exploring will love scrambling about. Dog walkers absolutely swear by the place.

Expect to spend a good hour or two if you're giving it a proper go. Spring's lovely when the bluebells are up, though autumn colour can be spectacular too. Being so close to Hereford makes it handy for a morning ramble before heading into town.

Several campsites dot the area, including Long Coppice and Poston Mill, both within four miles. It's the sort of place that works well as part of a Herefordshire break - not a destination in itself, but a cracking spot for stretching your legs.
