Banses Wood

The woodland around Banses Wood, just a few miles outside Hereford, is proper walking country. Ancient broadleaf forest, the kind where you actually feel like you've stepped away from things - gnarled oaks, tangled undergrowth, proper shade even on bright days.

It's not a destination with visitor facilities or marked trails in the traditional sense. This is a place for people who enjoy simply being in the woods, away from the manicured paths. You'll find yourself among old growth, spotting the occasional stream and whatever wildlife decides to show itself. Walkers get the most from it - serious walkers particularly, those who know how to navigate and don't need every turn signposted. Families with young children after an hour of structured activity might find it a bit aimless, though kids who actually like being outdoors will love the freedom to explore.

Allow at least two hours if you're planning a decent walk. The beauty of Banses is that you set your own pace and route, which sounds lovely in theory but means you need some confidence with navigation. No entrance fee as far as I can tell - it's woodland, not a ticketed attraction.

If you're based at Long Coppice Campsite or one of the other parks within spitting distance of Hereford, Banses makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion. It pairs well with exploring Hereford itself, or combining it with other woodland walks in this corner of the county. Don't come expecting facilities, car parks with information boards, or refreshment stands. Come because you want to be among proper forest.
