Tregeare Rounds

Two grass-covered mounds rising out of the Cornish moorland just outside Bodmin - that's Tregeare Rounds, and it's one of those sites that stops you dead in your tracks. Iron Age hill fort, they reckon, though walking around it now you're essentially looking at lumpy fields with decent views across the moor. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking for: ditches and ramparts that once protected whoever lived here two thousand years ago.

It's the kind of place that appeals most to archaeology buffs or anyone keen on Cornish history. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just you and the landscape. Walkers, though, will find it genuinely rewarding. The walk from Bodmin takes about forty minutes each way, and the moorland around it is proper lovely. Free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter can be boggy.

If you're staying at Rosebud Farm Touring Park or Camp De Lank Cornwall - both excellent bases - Tregeare makes a natural morning or afternoon outing before heading back for dinner. St Minver Holiday Park is a touch further out but still manageable. The real appeal here is combining a modest archaeological interest with a decent moorland walk. Don't come expecting much infrastructure, but do come if you want to feel genuinely connected to Cornish Bronze and Iron Age settlement patterns. It's worth the detour if you're already exploring the Bodmin area.
