Torrisdale Castle Estate

The ruins of Torrisdale Castle stand on a headland overlooking the Kintyre Peninsula, about ten minutes' drive from Campbeltown. What you get is a proper slice of Scottish castle archaeology - the remains of a 15th-century stronghold with enough intact stonework to fire the imagination, particularly if you're into medieval fortifications or family history research.

The site itself is open to wander round freely, which means you can spend as long as you like picking your way through the roofless halls and examining the thick stone walls. The setting matters as much as the structure here. Views across the water towards the Mull of Kintyre are excellent, and it's genuinely quiet in a way that makes you feel like you've actually discovered something rather than queued for an admission booth.

Family groups with kids aged eight-plus will get something out of it, though it's not the sort of place that holds attention for hours. Walkers doing longer routes through Kintyre will find it worth a detour. Local history enthusiasts should absolutely make the effort.

If you're staying at Carradale Bay Holiday Park just over an hour north, Torrisdale slots neatly into a day trip exploring the southern peninsula. The drive down is scenic, and the castle pairs well with walking the wider coastline. Go when the weather's on your side - exposed headlands can be bleak when it's wet. Allow forty minutes to an hour for a proper look round.
