Beinn an Tuirc

The walk up Beinn an Tuirc from Campbeltown takes you to one of those peaks that feels properly rewarding without being a slog. You're looking at a steady climb through moorland and rough grass - nothing technical, but your legs will know about it by the summit at around 453 metres. On a clear day, the views across the Mull of Kintyre and out towards Islay make the effort worthwhile. The mountain itself sits between Campbeltown and Carradale, so it's accessible from either direction depending on where you're staying.

This is walkers' territory, frankly. Families with young kids will find it bit of a push unless they're seasoned hikers, and there's not much to do once you're up there except take photos and enjoy the vista. But if you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Carradale Bay or Killegruer are both excellent - it's a cracking afternoon out. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on pace and how long you linger at the top.

The real appeal here is the isolation. You won't find crowds, and the moorland walking has a genuine wildness to it. If you're combining it with other Kintyre activities - beaches, coastal walks, the distillery at Campbeltown - Beinn an Tuirc works well as a proper outdoor day. Go in decent weather; the weather changes fast on Argyll peaks.
