Cnoc Donn

The walk up Cnoc Donn rewards you with views across the Kintyre peninsula that justify the climb, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to Arran. It's a proper peak - not enormous at around 270 metres, but steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit.

The route isn't marked with any fanfare. You'll find yourself pushing through bracken and heather, picking your way over rough ground, which is half the appeal if you're after something without the crowds. The views are the thing here - moorland rolling away in all directions, the Atlantic glinting in the distance, and on good days that sense of standing properly above everything else.

This suits walkers and hill enthusiasts far more than families with small children. You're looking at a couple of hours round trip depending on your pace and fitness, and there's nothing at the summit itself - no café, no facilities, just the landscape. Go on a dry day if you can; the ground gets boggy quickly after rain.

Cnoc Donn sits well within a caravan holiday around Campbeltown and the wider Kintyre. Carradale Bay Holiday Park is only 3.4 miles away and makes an excellent base - Killegruer Caravan Site and Muasdale Holiday Park are similarly close. Use it as a morning walk before exploring the peninsula's quieter corners, or tackle it as your main event for the day. It's the sort of modest Scottish peak that doesn't appear in guidebooks but gives you proper solitude.
