Carradale Point, Hillfort

The Iron Age fort at Carradale Point sits on a headland jutting into the Firth of Clyde, and honestly, the setting alone makes the walk worthwhile. You're looking at defensive ramparts that locals have been clambering over for two thousand years - rough stone walls that follow the contours of the land like they've grown there naturally.

It's not a manicured site with interpretive boards and gift shops. What you get is the fort itself, the views across to Arran and beyond, and the satisfying sense of standing where Iron Age folk once stood watch. The remains aren't dramatic - no soaring stonework - but the layout is clear enough if you look: the central settlement area, the outer defences, the way the terrain was used. Archaeologists have dated occupation here to around 500 BC, though the fort was refortified later too.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for a quick visit - you need time to wander the headland, read the landscape, take in how defensible the position actually is. Kids might find it bit abstract unless they're already interested in Iron Age Britain; there's no playground appeal here.

Campbeltown is the nearest town, about 20 minutes south, so you could base yourself at Carradale Bay Holiday Park just down the coast and work this in as a morning exploration before heading to the beach. The walk from the car park is straightforward, and it's free to access. Allow 90 minutes minimum if you're not rushing.
