Torre Abbey

The ruins of a medieval abbey sit quietly in Torquay's King's Garden, and they're far more interesting than the name suggests. Torre Abbey was founded in 1196 and what remains - a gatehouse, barn, and fragments of the church - tells the story of monastic life in Devon over 400 years. You can wander the grounds, peek into the old buildings, and get a real sense of how monks actually lived here, which beats staring at postcards any day.

The site works best for history types and anyone with decent patience for older ruins. Young children might find it a bit static unless you're good at storytelling, but there's enough space to let them run about between the buildings. The grounds themselves are pleasant enough - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful given how close it is to Torquay town centre.
