Tomont Hill

The walk up Tomont Hill takes you through proper Scottish countryside without the crowds you'd find on bigger peaks. It's not a bruiser of a climb - more of a steady plod from Biggar that rewards you with views across the Lowlands that stretch further than you'd expect from the height. The summit itself is fairly bare, just moorland and a trig point, but that's rather the point. You get genuine uninterrupted views rather than a carved-up tourist spot.

The climb takes about two hours there and back at a normal pace, which makes it ideal if you're staying at Howslack Farm caravan site down the way and fancy something that won't eat your whole day. Most people doing this are walkers after a decent leg stretch - it's not really a family outing unless your kids are already seasoned hikers. The moorland can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter more than the gradient does.

Free to walk, obviously. Biggar's only six miles off, so you can grab supplies beforehand or stop for a pint after. If you're planning a week around the caravan parks in Dumfries and Galloway, Tomont works well as a half-day excursion between bigger outings. It's the kind of walk that feels properly Scottish without any faffing about - just you, the hills, and a clear head.
