Tewsgill Hill

The walk up Tewsgill Hill is straightforward enough, but the views from the top justify the effort. You're looking out across the Lowlands from near Biggar - rolling farmland, the sweep of moorland beyond, and on a clear day you can see proper distance. It's not a dramatic peak, nothing like the Cairngorms, but that's rather the point. This is accessible walking country.

The climb itself takes under an hour for most people, and the path is well-defined without being tedious. Bring a decent map though, as navigation can be unclear in mist. Families with children will manage it without fuss, though younger legs might need a rest halfway. The real value here is as part of a larger walk rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a solid morning or early afternoon excursion. It breaks up what can otherwise be a static holiday, and gives you a genuine sense of the landscape without requiring technical gear or navigation skills. The hill itself is free to climb - there's no visitor infrastructure, which means no facilities but also no queues or entrance fees.

Go when the weather's settled. A wet, misty day up here is thoroughly unrewarding. Time it early in the day when you've got the light, and you'll understand why people bother with Scottish Lowland hills at all.
