Tollymore Forest Park

The Mourne Mountains rise up suddenly as you drive toward Newcastle, and Tollymore Forest Park is where you actually get to walk among them. It's Northern Ireland's first state forest park, all 1,160 acres of it, with the River Shimna running through steep-sided glens and proper woodland that feels genuinely wild.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking. There are paths ranging from a gentle riverside stroll to proper hill treks that climb toward the peaks. The Shimna Bridge is the iconic spot - a stone arch that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale, though it gets rammed with families on weekends. The real payoff comes if you push higher into the park, where the trees thin out and you get views across the Mourne range that justify the leg-work.

It's free to enter and open year-round. Allow anything from an hour for a riverside wander to a full day if you're tackling the higher routes. Spring's lovely for the woodland canopy, but autumn probably offers the best light for photographs.

Families will manage the lower trails easily; older kids and experienced walkers should head for the ridge paths. The park sits right next to Newcastle's town centre, making it an obvious base for a Mourne Mountains holiday. There are campsites practically on the park boundary - Camping Tollymore and Tollymore Campsite are steps away - plus the posher glamping option at Enniskeen Estate just up the road.

It's not flashy or Instagram-heavy, which is rather the point. You come here to actually move through a proper landscape, not collect photos.
