Slievenaglogh East Top

Climbing to 445 metres, this lesser-known summit in the Mourne Mountains delivers proper views across County Down without the crowds that flock to Slieve Donard. The path winds through heather and granite outcrops, demanding a decent level of fitness but rewarding you with panoramic vistas over Newcastle and the Irish Sea.

Experienced walkers will appreciate the more challenging route compared to some Mourne peaks - expect about three hours return from the nearest parking. The summit cairn marks a satisfying achievement, though families with young children might find the terrain a bit demanding for a day out.

Weather changes quickly up here, so pack layers even on sunny days. Early morning starts offer the clearest views and avoid afternoon crowds on neighbouring peaks. The descent can be tricky on wet rock, so proper walking boots are essential.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks around Newcastle makes this an excellent addition to a Mourne Mountains break. Tollymore Campsite and Camping Tollymore Forest Park both sit within easy reach, while Windsor Holiday Park offers a slightly more comfortable base if you prefer facilities over wilderness. After a day on the heights, Newcastle's cafes provide the perfect spot for recovery cake and a proper cup of tea.
