Slieve Beg

Standing at 522 metres, this Mourne Mountains peak delivers proper wilderness walking without the crowds that swarm neighbouring Slieve Donard. The climb from Newcastle takes you through classic granite country - weathered stone, purple heather, and views that stretch across to the Isle of Man on clear days.

Experienced walkers will appreciate the varied terrain and relative solitude. The ascent isn't technically difficult but demands decent fitness and proper kit, especially if weather turns. Rocky outcrops near the summit make for brilliant photo spots, though the final approach can be a bit scrambly.

Families with older children who've tackled other Mourne peaks will find this a good stepping stone before attempting the higher summits. Allow four to five hours for the full circuit from Newcastle.
