Castlewellan Country Park

The lake is the real draw here. Castlewellan Country Park spreads across 600 acres of woodland and open ground just outside Newcastle, with a proper Victorian estate at its heart and a substantial artificial lake that actually rewards an afternoon's wandering. You can walk the perimeter - it takes a good hour at a leisurely pace - or just sit by the water with a flask and watch the light change through the trees.

It's strongest suit is the sheer space. Families with young kids will appreciate the flat, well-maintained paths and the fact that there's room to let them run without worrying too much. Walkers won't find dramatic scenery or challenging terrain, but the woodland itself is pleasant enough, with mature trees and the occasional surprise vista over the lake. The estate grounds contain a small arboretum if you're into that sort of thing.

Don't come expecting drama or isolation. The park draws a steady stream of visitors, particularly on weekends, and the lake's somewhat artificial quality is unavoidable once you notice it. Still, it works as a solid half-day outing, especially if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Escape Glamping or Funny Farm Adventures. Toll​ymore Forest Park, just down the road, offers more rugged walking if you need something meatier.

Frequently free to enter, though confirm beforehand. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full circuit. Come on a weekday morning if you can - the midweek peace makes all the difference.
