Toft Hill

Climbing 245 feet above the Lincolnshire Wolds might not sound like much, but Toft Hill delivers surprisingly big views for such a modest effort. The gentle ascent through farmland near Kirkby on Bain rewards you with panoramic vistas across the rolling countryside that stretches towards the coast.

Walkers will appreciate this as a proper leg-stretcher without the drama of Lake District peaks. Families with older children can manage the climb easily, though toddlers might find it a bit much. The summit itself is fairly exposed, so wrap up well on blustery days.

From the top, you can pick out the spire of Horncastle in the distance and trace the meandering River Bain below. It's the sort of view that makes you appreciate why the Wolds earned their Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status, even if they're often overlooked in favour of flashier landscapes.

Allow about an hour for the round trip, longer if you fancy a proper sit-down at the top with a thermos. Best tackled on clear days when the visibility stretches for miles - there's little point slogging up in thick mist.
