St. Helen's Wood

Dense woodland paths wind through this proper old-growth forest just outside Kirkby on Bain, where ancient oaks and beech trees create a canopy thick enough to block summer sun. The walking here isn't particularly challenging - mostly flat tracks that families will manage easily - but there's something satisfying about losing yourself among trees that have been standing for centuries.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place. You'll encounter plenty of them early morning, and the hounds clearly know every sniffable corner. Wildlife spotters might catch glimpses of deer if they're quiet enough, though most visitors come simply for a decent woodland ramble without the crowds you'd find at better-known forests.

Allow a good hour or two if you're planning to explore properly. The paths aren't waymarked particularly well, so don't expect a manicured forest experience - this feels genuinely wild. That said, it's easily accessible from several holiday parks around Woodhall Spa and Tattershall Lakes Country Park, making it a lovely morning escape when you fancy swapping caravan life for proper countryside. Free parking appears to be available, though facilities are minimal. Come prepared with sturdy shoes - the paths get muddy after rain.
