Toby's Bench

The bench itself is modest - a simple wooden seat overlooking the Yorkshire Wolds near Driffield - but the reason it's here tells a better story than most tourist attractions manage in a day. It's a working nature reserve where the real action happens quietly: you'll spot lapwings, curlews, and if you're lucky, the occasional kestrel cutting across the open grassland. The landscape is proper rolling stuff, gentle rather than dramatic, with wide views that stretch for miles when the weather cooperates.

Walkers get the most from Toby's Bench. This isn't a quick photo stop - it's genuinely worth an hour or two if you're into spotting birds or just want to sit with the Wolds stretched out in front of you. The bench itself faces the right direction, which someone clearly thought about. Spring and early summer are your best bet for birdwatching, though the reserve works year-round.

If you're camping at any of the local glamping spots - Seaways, Yorkshire Wolds, or Wolds Walk are all within five or six miles - this is an easy morning outing that breaks up the holiday routine without demanding much. Free to visit, no faffing about with opening hours. The Driffield area has more substantial attractions if you need them, but there's something restorative about spending an hour doing essentially nothing but watching birds and thinking. That's the whole point, really.
