Duggleby Howe

A Bronze Age burial mound rising abruptly from the flat Yorkshire Wolds landscape - that's Duggleby Howe, and it's genuinely one of those spots that stops you in your tracks. The earthwork itself is substantial, around 40 metres across and still impressively high despite 4,000-odd years of weather and farming. You can walk right up to it, clamber about on the slopes, and take in the Wolds rolling away in every direction.

Archaeology nerds will find plenty to chew over here. Excavations in the early 1900s uncovered Neolithic and Bronze Age remains, including cremated human bones and flint tools, though there's precious little interpretation on site itself - you're doing the detective work yourself. That's either brilliant or slightly frustrating depending on your mood. Families with older kids who've got past the "are we there yet" stage tend to enjoy the scramble up and the vista from the top; toddlers will find it dull after five minutes.

Near Driffield, it's easy to slot into a morning walk if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Seaways, Yorkshire Wolds, or Wolds Walk are all within easy striking distance. Allow 30 minutes here, longer if you're the type to sit and imagine Iron Age chieftains being buried with ceremony. There's no visitor facility or admission charge as far as I can tell, just a field and a mound. Bring decent boots; it gets muddy.
