The walk up Tinny Bank catches you off guard - what looks like a modest hill from Moffat suddenly becomes something with real teeth once you're on the path. It's steep, properly steep in places, and the scramble near the top will have you using your hands if you're not careful. But that's precisely why it's worth doing.

From the summit, the views sprawl across Dumfries and Galloway in a way that makes the huffing and puffing feel justified. On a clear day you can pick out ridges and valleys for miles, with the town of Moffat sitting quite small in the distance below. The path itself is well-trodden - locals clearly know what they're doing - and the whole outing takes a couple of hours at a steady pace.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with small children will struggle with the gradient, and anyone after a gentle stroll should look elsewhere. But if you've got decent boots and don't mind a bit of graft, Tinny Bank delivers proper moorland hiking without the commitment of a full day out. Stay at Howslack Farm caravan site just 4 miles away and you can knock this out before lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring quieter corners of the park itself.

The exposure on the upper section means it's not ideal in high wind or poor visibility, so pick your weather carefully. Summer weekends can get busy with day-trippers from Moffat, but midweek or outside peak season you'll have the place largely to yourself.
