Thunder stone

A weathered lump of rock sitting on moorland near Kendal doesn't sound like much, but Thunder Stone carries proper weight. This is a Bronze Age standing stone - about 4,000 years old - that's managed to stay put while empires rose and fell around it. The thing's roughly six feet tall, rough-hewn granite that's taken a hammering from centuries of Cumbrian weather.

You'll find it on open moorland, which means the walk itself becomes part of the draw. The views across the fells are genuinely fine, especially on clear days when you can see right across the valley towards the Lake District proper. It's the kind of spot that rewards an early morning visit - fewer people, better light, and you get a proper sense of why someone thought this particular piece of landscape mattered enough to mark it.

This is one for history types and serious walkers rather than casual visitors. Kids might get restless - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café. Just the stone and the fell. Allow a good hour including the walk in and around it. The nearest town, Kendal, is about six miles south, making Thunder Stone a natural add-on to a broader Lake District trip.

If you're camping locally - Two Acre Glamping Pods or Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site are both close by - this works well as a half-morning excursion before heading to bigger attractions. Worth the detour if you're already in the area exploring the fells. Less worth it if you're just passing through.
