Fellside Wood (Woodland Trust)

A proper woodland walk that doesn't require you to trek halfway up a fell - Fellside Wood is a Woodland Trust site just outside Kendal, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon when you're after something low-key between bigger Lake District activities. The woodland itself is manageable, with paths that wind through native broadleaf trees, and you'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right. It's free to access and won't eat into your holiday budget.

This is best for families who don't fancy a full mountain day, or walkers wanting a gentle intermediate option. Kids can burn off energy without the danger of steep drops, and there are usually enough fallen logs and streams to keep them occupied. Allow an hour for a proper mooch around, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle. The nearest caravan base is The Ashes, just 1.9 miles away - handy if you're parked up there.

Go in May or June when the wood's at its best, though autumn's decent too for the light filtering through. Winter can be boggy underfoot. It's a solid addition to a Kendal-based week - pair it with a town day and a bigger fell walk, and you've got variety without overdoing it. The wood won't wow you like Catbells or Skiddaw will, but that's exactly the point. Sometimes you want somewhere calm where you can actually hear the birds.
