Tarn Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured visitor attraction, Tarn Plantation sits just outside Kendal and delivers exactly what its name promises - trees, water, and a chance to actually breathe. The plantation itself is straightforward: coniferous forest wrapping around a small tarn, with paths that let you loop around the water or push deeper into the wood depending on your legs and how much time you've got.

It's ideal for families who want their kids off screens for an hour or two without needing a visitor centre, cafe, or other infrastructure. The paths are manageable, though muddy stretches are guaranteed after rain. Walkers will find it a solid warm-up or cool-down walk if you're tackling bigger fells nearby - nothing strenuous, but enough to clear your head. History buffs might find less here than they'd like, though the tarn itself has that timeless Lakeland quality.
