Thunacar Knott (summit)

The walk up Thunacar Knott isn't long, but it's proper steep. Starting from Great Langdale, you're looking at a relentless ascent that'll have your legs burning within ten minutes. The path is well-trodden and rocky in places, especially higher up where the gradient really bites.

Once you've hauled yourself to the summit, the payoff is genuine. You get panoramic views across the Lake District fells - Bowfell dominates the skyline, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Coniston range. The summit itself is small and rocky, more functional than dramatic, but the exposure is nice without being vertiginous.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Great Langdale Campsite or Great Langdale Glamping and want something less crowded than the main valley hikes. Walkers with decent fitness will manage it in under two hours return. Kids can do it, though the steep sections mean you'll need to keep a close eye on younger ones - it's not a ramble, it's a proper work-out.

Timing matters. Early morning takes you away from the crowds, and afternoon light on the western fells is lovely. Weather-dependent though - when the cloud rolls in from the west, the views vanish entirely and the rock gets slick.

If you're basing yourself near Ambleside, it's an easy drive into Great Langdale to start. Pair it with a longer Lake District itinerary rather than treating it as a standalone - it's the sort of fell that fits perfectly into a week of walking.
