Thorp's Plantation

The woodland here spreads across a decent patch of East Yorkshire, a few miles south of Hull - proper handy if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Little Otchan or Parkdean Withernsea. It's the kind of forest that works well as a half-day venture rather than a full expedition. You get decent footpaths winding through the trees, and if conditions are right, it's a genuine escape from the flat horizon that defines so much of this corner of Yorkshire.

This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres or car parks that announce themselves from miles away. Thorp's Plantation feels like an actual working forest - you'll see evidence of timber management alongside natural growth. That's part of its appeal, honestly. Walkers will find it straightforward enough, though in winter the paths can get muddy underfoot, so boots are sensible. Families with younger children might manage an hour or ninety minutes before restlessness sets in; teenagers who actually like walking could stretch it longer.

The real value here is as a breather during a coastal holiday. If you're doing the rounds of Sand le Mere or Withernsea Sands, this gives you a couple of hours among trees instead of sand dunes. It won't compete with visits to bigger attractions, but that's fine - sometimes a walk through woodland is exactly what's needed. Go when it's dry, bring a map or phone with you, and manage your expectations. This is functional woodland, and that's precisely what makes it work.
