Thornums Wood

A proper woodland walk just a short drive from York, Thornums Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why you haven't been before. Ancient trees form a thick canopy, and in spring the forest floor erupts with bluebells - genuinely spectacular if you time it right. The paths are well-maintained, muddy in places, but nothing that'll stop you in decent boots.

This is ideal for walkers wanting a break from the city without heading too far afield. Families with older kids will find it engaging for an hour or so, though there's not much in the way of dramatic views or play equipment - it's just good, straightforward woodland. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the place is alive with them, especially first thing in the morning.

I'd allow two hours for a proper mooch around, longer if you're taking photographs. The best visit is late April through May when the bluebells are out. Summer can feel a bit gloomy under the canopy, and it gets properly muddy in winter.

If you're based at Acorn Glade Glamping or The Spinney Wild Camping - both excellent spots within five miles - this makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing. It pairs well with a York city walk; you get woodland peace without losing the option of proper amenities and decent food nearby. Free to access, no permit needed that I can find.
