The tea rooms lured me in first - that's usually a good sign. Thornthwaite Galleries sits just outside Keswick, and it's one of those places that rewards a gentle afternoon rather than a rushed visit. The setup is straightforward: working artists' studios and exhibition spaces where you can actually watch people creating, then browse what they've made. Proper hands-on stuff, not stuffy gallery remoteness.

You'll find a mix of mediums here - painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery - so it's worth allowing an hour to nose around properly. The tea rooms are the real draw if I'm honest. Decent coffee, the kind of homemade cake that makes you wonder why you don't bake more often, and tables where you can settle in without feeling rushed. It's exactly the sort of place to decompress after a morning's walking in the Lakes.

Families with older kids will get something out of it - there's enough variety to hold attention - but younger ones might lose interest once the cake's finished. Serious art collectors and working artists often pop in, so it's not purely touristy, which is refreshing.

If you're camping at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall just down the road, this makes a natural mid-week breather. Even Kestrel Lodge, a bit further out, isn't far enough to rule it out. Check ahead on opening times though - it's not the sort of place that's always open bank holidays. Worth the short drive from Keswick for the tea rooms alone, frankly.
