Thorganby Hall Wood

The woodland around Thorganby Hall in East Yorkshire feels properly secluded, even though York is barely a twenty-minute drive away. Ancient oak and beech dominate the canopy, and on a quiet weekday morning the birdsong drowns out any traffic noise from the surrounding farmland. Walking these paths, you get the sense of being somewhere genuinely removed from things, which is rare this close to a city.

It's a walker's sort of place rather than a destination for sitting about. The trails wind through dense cover and open into small clearings where the light hits differently. There's enough ground here to spend a good couple of hours if you're not rushing, though you won't need a full day unless you're really lingering. The woodland floor can get boggy in winter, so proper boots matter.

Families with older children will get more from it than toddlers - there aren't picnic areas or play equipment, and younger kids tend to get restless without defined features to head towards. But if your teenagers actually walk without complaining, this is the sort of quiet woodland that might pull them off their phones for an hour or two.

It works nicely as a morning excursion from either Acorn Glade Glamping York or The Spinney Wild Camping, both a short drive away. Neither will break the bank either. The woodland has that uncommon quality of being genuinely peaceful without feeling manicured, which makes it worth the detour if you're spending time in this corner of Yorkshire.
