You'll find this rather unusual library tucked away in Maldon, Essex - a place that feels frozen in time, which is entirely the point. Thomas Plume's Library is a 17th-century collection of books and manuscripts assembled by an eccentric clergyman and left to the town, still sitting on its original shelves in the same building he used.

It's genuinely small, and that's part of the charm. Expect old leather spines, hand-annotated volumes, and the sort of scholarly atmosphere that makes you want to whisper. The collection runs to around 3,500 items, many of them rare enough that you won't be handling them yourself - staff will fetch what you ask to see. If you're into local history, ecclesiastical texts, or just the tactile experience of old books, you'll find it worthwhile. Everyone else will probably tire after 30 minutes.

You're in Maldon itself, which means you're well-placed for a coastal break. Mill Beach and Osea Leisure Park are both within a couple of miles, and the town has its own waterfront charm - all salt marshes and moored boats rather than traditional seaside. The library feels like the sort of thing you'd visit while waiting for the tide, or between park days if the weather turns grim.
