It's not mountainous terrain; more a gentle riverside stroll that works well for families who aren't after a full day's hiking. Bring binoculars if you're into ornithology. Kids will manage the paths fine, though it's not the sort of place that'll keep under-eights entertained for hours.

Being free and accessible from Maldon town centre makes it an easy add-on to a holiday at one of the nearby parks like Mill Beach Seaside Resort or Osea Leisure Park - both within walking distance if you're up for it. Allow an hour or so for a decent mooch about; longer if you're serious about spotting things. Spring and autumn tend to be best for migrating birds.
