Third Crinkle (Gunson Knott)

The walk up Third Crinkle rewards you with views that make the slog genuinely worthwhile. It's the middle fell in the Crinkle Crags trio, and while it doesn't have the dramatic rock formations of its neighbours, the panorama across the Lake District from up here is properly stunning - you get the whole of Great Langdale laid out below you like someone's spread an ordnance survey map across the valley floor.

This is a proper fell walk, not a gentle stroll. The route from the Old Dungeon Ghyll car park (near Ambleside) climbs steeply and the terrain is rocky underfoot - bring good boots. Most people take three to four hours round trip, though fit walkers manage it in less. It's best tackled in decent weather when visibility counts; on a claggy day you're just trudging uphill through cloud, which loses the whole point of being up there.

Walkers will absolutely get it. Families with young children won't - the ascent is relentless and there's nothing to break up the climb for restless legs. This is the sort of walk you do because you want the fell experience, not because there's a cafe or viewpoint platform at the top.

Staying at Great Langdale Campsite or one of the other excellent sites nearby puts you perfectly placed. The Crinkles are right on your doorstep, and you can string together multiple days of walking without moving your tent. Well worth the effort for anyone who actually enjoys climbing fells.
