The chalk grassland here rolls out in a way that feels proper wild for East Anglia - 120 hectares of the stuff stretching across the ridges east of Royston. It's one of the few places where you get a genuine sense of what the uplands looked like centuries ago, before farming flattened everything into rectangles. Walkers get the best from Therfield Heath. The paths wind through open grassland with decent views across the Cambridgeshire plains, and depending on the season you'll spot wildflowers that most people never bother to notice - bird's-foot trefoil, salad burnet, the works. It's not dramatic, but it's real. The heath attracts a specific type of visitor: keen botanists, history types interested in how medieval communities shaped the land, and walkers who prefer solitude to crowded beauty spots. Families with small children might find it a bit samey after 45 minutes unless they're already into nature spotting. Free to access and no formal hours - you just turn up, which is how it should be. Spring through early autumn is best, when the grassland actually looks like something happened to it. Winter's muddy and grey. Allow two to three hours for a proper circuit if you're not rushing. Staying at Guilden Gate Glamping two miles off makes sense - you get the walking without missing out on creature comforts. The other parks nearby (Ashridge Farm, Shepreth Mill) work too if you want to explore the wider area around Royston, though honestly Therfield Heath is the kind of place you visit once, appreciate, then move on to something with more going on.
