The Wilderness

Four hundred metres of rocky outcrop juts skyward just outside Willstone, offering one of Shropshire's more accessible hill walks without the crowds that plague the Long Mynd. The Wilderness might sound dramatic, but it's a gentle scramble that most reasonably fit walkers can manage in wellies.

Views from the summit take in the rolling Shropshire Hills and, on clear days, stretch toward the Welsh borders. It's not spectacular - think pleasant rather than breathtaking - but the lack of other people makes it feel properly remote. Families with older children will find it manageable, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky section.

Allow an hour and a half return from the small parking area near Willstone. The path can get muddy after rain, so proper boots are wise. Early morning visits reward you with the best light and fewer dog walkers.

It's free, always open, and honestly, a good warm-up if you're planning to tackle Caer Caradoc or the Stiperstones later in your stay.
