The Whangie

A slab of rock that looks like someone's taken a knife to the hillside - that's The Whangie in a nutshell. This dramatic geological fault sits just above Glasgow in the Stirling area, and it's genuinely striking. You walk up through moorland for about twenty minutes from the car park, then suddenly there's this raw, jagged split in the landscape where the stone's been pulled apart by ancient forces. It's free, it's accessible, and it doesn't require proper hiking boots.

The viewpoint itself is the real draw. On a clear day you're looking out over the Campsie Fells and towards Loch Lomond - proper countryside spread out below, which feels miles from Glasgow even though you're barely outside it. The rock formations are worth studying up close too; the striations tell you something's happened here. Walkers love it because the ascent is gentle enough for most fitness levels, and photographers get obsessed with the light hitting the stone at different times of day.

Worth half an hour to forty minutes once you're up there, longer if you're taking pictures or just sitting with a flask. Families with teenagers will enjoy it; small children might find the moorland slog tedious. Wind can be bracing, so dress accordingly.

If you're staying at The WHW Hotel & Campsite or any of the glamping pods nearby - Duncan Family Farms, Loch Lomond Sunset, or the others within five miles - The Whangie makes a solid half-morning outing before heading somewhere else. Not a destination in itself, but well worth the detour if you're in the area.
