The drive up to Auchineden takes you through proper hill country, and when you crest the final rise, the view stops you dead. You're looking across the Stirling area towards the Campsies and beyond - on a clear day you can see Glasgow sprawled out in the distance, which is oddly affecting given how far away the city feels up here.

It's a straightforward viewpoint rather than a destination with facilities or activities. Park up, get out, take in the landscape. The vistas work best in late afternoon light when the lowlands take on real depth. Morning visits can feel a bit flat by comparison, though the air's usually clearer.

This appeals to walkers and landscape photographers more than anyone else - you're not getting a visitor centre or a café, just honest views and often a bit of wind. It takes ten minutes to appreciate what's on offer, twenty if you're the lingering type. Folk with small children might find it underwhelming unless the scenery itself does it for them.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - The WHW Hotel & Campsite is closest at just over three miles - it's genuinely worth the short drive as an evening excursion. Pop up here before heading back for dinner. It slots nicely into a broader Stirling area loop that takes in the castle and the monument, though it's more about the walking country around Loch Lomond than formal attractions.
