About The Temple
Built in 1765 by Richard Hull as his private retreat (and eventual burial place), this Gothic tower stands 20 metres tall and transforms an already impressive viewpoint into something properly spectacular. On clear days, you can see across to the South Downs and even catch glimpses of London's skyline. The climb up the tower's narrow spiral staircase gets a bit tight with crowds, but the 360-degree views from the top justify every step.
Walkers and families with older children will get the most from this spot - the surrounding National Trust woodland offers several circular routes if you fancy making a proper day of it. The path from the car park takes about 15 minutes uphill, so factor that into plans with little ones.
Staying at Surrey Hills Yurts or camping at Embers near Polesden Lacey puts you within easy striking distance. It's free to explore the grounds, though there's a small charge to climb the tower itself.
