White Downs

Thick beech woods stretch across these chalk downlands just outside Westcott, offering proper old-fashioned woodland walking without the crowds you'll find elsewhere in the Surrey Hills. White Downs feels refreshingly wild - bracken tangles between the trees, ancient paths wind up through the canopy, and you can walk for ages without seeing another soul.

Families with older children will love the freedom to explore, though pushchair users should look elsewhere as the terrain gets pretty rough. Dog walkers have struck gold here - miles of unmarked tracks where your mutt can actually run free. The lack of formal facilities means no loos or cafes, so come prepared.

Best visited in autumn when the beech leaves turn proper golden, or spring for the bluebells. Summer can be a bit thick and buggy under the canopy. Allow a good two hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend half a day here if the walking bug bites.

Staying at Surrey Hills Yurts or one of the other nearby spots? White Downs makes a lovely contrast to the more manicured attractions around Polesden Lacey. It's proper countryside rambling - muddy boots essential, Instagram opportunities limited, but utterly peaceful for anyone wanting to escape into the woods.
