The Space Catapult

The Space Catapult sits on the outskirts of Leicester as a rather unexpected relic of Britain's space race ambitions. It's essentially a scaled model launcher that was used for early satellite and rocket testing in the 1960s - not exactly a towering monument, but the kind of thing that makes you stop and think about how seriously we once took getting into orbit from the Midlands.

Walking around it, you get a real sense of post-war optimism mixed with that peculiarly British approach to engineering. The structure itself is modest, all steel and geometric precision, the sort of thing that would've seemed impossibly futuristic at the time. Historians and space enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting - there's something rather moving about standing where actual experiments happened. Families with older kids who aren't bored by industrial heritage might enjoy it as a quick stop, though younger ones will probably lose interest within ten minutes.

It's best approached as part of a broader walk around Leicester's scientific and industrial heritage rather than a day trip in itself. You're close enough to Bradgate Park to combine both - hit the catapult first, then head to the park for the walk and views. Leicester itself has decent museums and restaurants to fill out a proper day.

Free to visit from what I can gather, and you can see everything in under an hour. Spring or early autumn are nicest - summer weekends get busy and winter's just grey and cold. Not a detour unless you're already in the area, but if you are, absolutely worth fifteen minutes of your time.
