Nature Lake, Watermead Country Park

The lake itself is the real draw here - a proper body of water that actually feels like you've escaped Leicester rather than just popped three miles out of the city centre. Watermead Country Park wraps around Nature Lake and gives you space to breathe, which matters more than you'd think in the East Midlands.

You can walk the perimeter easily enough, taking maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on how often you stop. The water attracts waterfowl year-round, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Families with younger kids will find it manageable - flat terrain, no major hills, proper paths. Older children might get restless if you're just walking, but there's enough going on along the banks to keep things interesting.

It's free to access and open during daylight hours. Best visited in spring or autumn when the light's better and it's not rammed with locals. Summer weekends can feel a bit busy.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby camping spots - Cossiwild is closest at just over 3 miles - this makes a decent morning outing before heading to Bradgate Park for more ambitious walking. It's the sort of place that slots into a wider Leicestershire trip rather than being a destination in itself. Worth an hour if you're in the area, but don't build a day around it alone.
