The Small Fort - Garn Goch

Two Iron Age hillforts sit on this ridge above Llangadog, and honestly, it's the walk that makes it. The earthworks themselves are subtle - you're looking at defensive ditches and ramparts that have weathered two thousand years, so don't expect dramatic stone ruins. What you actually get is a proper sense of how these Welsh communities fortified their hilltops, and the views across the Towy Valley are tremendous.

The site is free and there's no visitor centre or facilities, which keeps it wonderfully undisturbed. Allow a good two hours if you're coming from Llangadog - the walk is steady rather than brutal, maybe three miles up and back depending on your route. Historians and Iron Age enthusiasts will find the dual-fort layout genuinely interesting; families with restless kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already into archaeology.

Weather matters here. Pick a clear day or you'll spend most of your time in cloud, which rather defeats the purpose. The best approach is from the south, and there's a reasonable path, though it's overgrown in places and can be muddy.

It pairs well with a base at one of the nearby parks around Llangadog - Cosmos Camping and Barons Court are the closest, both just over three miles away. The area has decent walking all around the Towy Valley, so treat Garn Goch as one part of a wider rambling holiday rather than a single-destination trip. The effort gets you a genuine, untouched Iron Age landscape.
