The Shrubbery

Don't expect Monty Python references - this patch of woodland near Highbridge is properly named and surprisingly peaceful. The Shrubbery offers a decent stretch of forest paths that wind through mixed woodland, with enough variety to keep walkers entertained for an hour or two. Oak and beech dominate the canopy, creating lovely dappled light on sunny afternoons.

Families with young children will find the terrain manageable, though pushchairs might struggle on some of the narrower tracks. Dog walkers seem to love the place - there's enough space for proper off-lead romps without worrying about traffic. The undergrowth changes with the seasons, from spring bluebells to autumn fungi that'll fascinate amateur naturalists.

Being so close to Burnham-on-Sea, it makes a cracking alternative to beach days when the weather turns. You can easily combine a morning walk here with an afternoon at Haven Burnham-on-Sea Holiday Village or any of the nearby parks around Lakeside Holiday Park. The lack of facilities means bringing your own drinks, but that's half the appeal - proper countryside escape just minutes from the caravan sites.
